Incorporated: 1776
|
Origin: First granted in 1735, the town was one of the fort towns designated to protect the colonies from Indian attack, named Monadnock Number 8. In December 1776, the newly established American revolutionary government incorporated the town as Washington, in honor of General George Washington. It was the first town in the United States to bear the name.

Population Trends:
Washington's population, although small in number, grew above the statewide average rate for the last four decades. After decreasing by four percent between 1950-1960, growth reached a high of 66 percent between 1970-1980. Washington's population increased by a total of 727 residents between the 1950 Census count of 168 and the 2000 count of 895 residents. The 2004 Census estimate for Washington was 1,010 residents, which ranked 184th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
