Incorporated: 1764

Origin: First granted in 1753, this town was named Buckingham, after John Hobart, first Earl of Buckinghamshire. Grants of this area were given by the early Massachusetts government to settlers from Hampton and Kingston, and also by Governor Benning Wentworth, to settlers from Connecticut. Upon friendly resolution of the claim dispute in 1764, the town was renamed Unity.

Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 538 residents in 1790

Population Trends: Over the last five decades, Unity's population has grown about two and a third times larger. Decennial population growth ranged from virtually no change between 1960-1970 to a 54 percent increase between 1970-1980. Unity's population increased by a total of 877 residents between the 1950 Census count of 653 and the 2000 Census count of 1,530 residents. The 2004 Census estimate for Unity was 1,661 residents, which ranked 151st among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2004: 44.9 persons per square mile of land area. Unity contains 37.0 square miles of land area and 0.2 square miles of inland water area.
