Origin: Named for Thomas Robinson, first Baron Grantham, friend of Governor Wentworth, an active supporter of American independence, and known as a diplomat in Europe. He was present at the negotiations leading to the 1748 signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle that ended the War of Austrian Succession, of which the French and Indian War in the Americas were a side struggle. Later, the Baron was one of Great Britain's first postmaster-generals.

Population Trends:
Grantham's population grew six times larger over fifty years, and growth rates over the last three decades were at least three times higher than average. Growth rates ranged from an eight percent decrease between 1950-1960 to a 92 percent increase between 1970-1980. Grantham's population increased by 1,808 residents, going from 359 in 1950 to 2,167 in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Grantham was 2,442 residents, which ranked 117th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
