Origin: First settled in 1768 as part of Saville, now Sunapee. The town was incorporated in 1791, with portions of territory from Newbury, Lempster, Unity, Newport, and Sunapee. It was named Goshen, probably because many residents had relatives in Goshen, Connecticut, and had served in a Revolutionary regiment with soldiers from that same town.

Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 383 residents in 1800

Population Trends: Goshen's population doubled over the last five decades, even though the 1990 and 2000 Census counts were nearly identical. Decennial growth rates ranged from a one percent decrease between 1950-1960 to a 39 percent increase between 1970-1980. Goshen's population increased by 385 residents, going from 356 in 1950 to 741 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Goshen was 801 residents, which ranked 198th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
