Origin: Established in 1763, the town was once known as Mast Camp, because it was the shipping point for the tall masts floated down the river by the English. It was named for Sir Samuel Cornish, a distinguished admiral of the Royal Navy. Cornish is now a well-known summer resort for artists and writers, with residents including Maxfield Parish and Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

Cornish grew below the average rate over each decade, with growth rates hitting a high of 19 percent between 1980-1990, then dropping to a low of less than one percent between 1990-2000, a numeric difference of only two. Cornish's population increased by a total of 672 residents over fifty years, going from 989 in 1950 to 1,661 resident in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Cornish was 1,756 residents, which ranked 146th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
