Origin: Named in honor of Admiral Sir Charles Knowles of the British Navy, then governor of Jamaica. Charlestown was originally the site of Number Four, the fourth in a line of forts on the Connecticut River border established as trading posts. A reproduction of Fort Number Four is now a historical site. A historical marker commemorating the fort was erected in 1958—the second such marker erected in the NH Historical Marker Program.

Population Trends:
Population growth rates in Charlestown were above average over the first three of the last five decades. The highest increase was 35 percent between 1970-1980; which was followed by a five percent increase between 1980-1990, and a three percent increase between 1990-2000. Charlestown grew by a total of 2,672 residents, going from 2,077 in 1950 to 4,749 in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Charlestown was 4,929 residents, which ranked 67th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
