Origin: Acworth was first chartered in 1752 as Burnet, in honor of William Burnet, colonial governor of Massachusetts and New Hampshire in 1728. However, no settlements were made under this charter. In 1766, the town was regranted under the name Acworth, honoring Sir Jacob Acworth of the British Admiralty, who had Portsmouth shipping interests.

Population Trends:
Like many communities, Acworth's population grew just above the statewide average rate over three of the last five decades. Decennial growth rates ranged from an 11 percent decrease between 1950-1960 to a 32 percent increase between 1980-1990. Between 1950 and 2000 Acworth's population exactly doubled, going from 418 residents in 1950 to 836 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Acworth was 882 residents, which ranked 192nd among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
